Activity / Venue:               Raft building

This risk assessment assesses the hazards and actions peculiar to this particular activity or venue.  Unspecified but included are the normal hazards associated with managing people whose conduct may impinge on the public.  The control measure for, which is the use of appropriately, trained experienced and qualified staff.

Participants

Drowning

Buoyancy aids/life jackets worn at all times.

In the case of capsize; staff to ensure that all participants are accounted for and safe.

 

All sessions run by qualified/trained instructors

 

Banging head

Helmets to be worn at all times.

 

 

Raft capsize

Instructor no more than 10 meters from participants at any time.

 

 

Equipment

All equipment to be checked before and after each session.

 

 

Personal clothing

Ensure that glasses are securely fastened to the buoyancy aid.  Hair to be tied back

 

 

Launching area

The site must be a good area so all group members can see and hear the instructors

Indicate the route for leaving the launch area

 

Objects falling from the raft

All loose items to be removed from the raft and participants pockets.

 

 

Participants getting stuck under the raft.

Throw line ready at hand.

Do not go under bridges.

 

Participants getting caught in loose rope.

Make sure all ropes are tied and secured properly.

Instructors to carry a knife

 

 

Hypothermia

Ensure that appropriate clothing is worn

 

 

 

Weils Disease and other water born diseases

 

All participants to be warned of the dangers and instructed to wash their hands at the earliest possible time.

 

 

Injury from poles, paddles and ropes

All participants briefed on how to carry equipment and the dangers of entrapment of fingers during the construction and dismantling.

Briefed on the dangers of swinging ropes around others

Briefed on the dangers of wielding paddles in confined spaces.
