Activity / Venue:        Open boat canoeing/kayaking – Placid water

This risk assessment assesses the hazards and actions peculiar to this particular activity or venue.  Unspecified but included are the normal hazards associated with managing people whose conduct may impinge on the public.  The control measure for, which is the use of appropriately, trained experienced and qualified staff.

Drowning

Buoyancy aid/life jackets worn at all times

All sessions run by BCU instructors

 

Boat capsize

Instructor to be with the group at all times and no more than 10 meters from participants

 

 

Banging head

Helmets to be worn at all times.

 

 

Launching area

The site must be a good area so all group members can see and hear the instructors

 

 

Equipment

All equipment checked before and after each session

 

 

Hypothermia and sunburn

Appropriate clothing & footwear at all times.

Sun cream to be worn when necessary

 

 

Injury from paddles

Briefed on the dangers of wielding paddles in confined spaces.

All participants to wear appropriate shoe/trainers

 

 

Objects falling from the canoes/kayaks

All loose items to be removes from the canoe/kayak before the start of the session.

All participants to be warned of the dangers and instructed to wash their hands at the earliest possible time.

Participants warned to steer away from anglers lines wherever possible

Brief participants on who to safely carry the boats

Participants warned in briefing to keep away from all other boats

 

 

Environment

Brief participants on foliage and animal excrement that might be at the waters edge.

 

 

Groups

Information to be left at the centre regarding time and direction of groups session and expected return time.
